If the truth be told, Measurement Maven KD Paine really don't disagree by much on the issue of social media and measurement. My side of it is that we don't yet know what to measure. Her side of it--if I may be so bold--is that corporate customers need to measure something. These are not opposing views but thy make for some interesting circular conversations.
We've been bickering about measurement issues for more years than either of us can recall. We used to debate about it from the dais of the Soft*letter conferences of the mid-1980s. We were told then that we bickered like an old married couple and I don't think that has changed much.
The truth can also be told that she is one of my best friends in the social media world, that I admire her courage, her strength, her wisdom and her passion. I often recommend her as a speaker, particularly at events related to social media and the enterprise.
I'm a keynoter along with David Weinberger, Charlene Li, and Amy Jo Kim at Conference 2.0 (no site yet) in Vegas this May 12-14. It should be a good conference, but that's another story. What's relevant is that a couple months back I recommend that KD be invited to speak. Last I knew, she had declined.
Today, I discovered that she was indeed speaking, on the same day as me. He topic: "Measuring Naked Conversations." I'll be there, armed with ripe fruit and lessons in heckling learned years ago at Fenway Park.
