Back when I was a PR guy to a startup called Napster, I advised them to dedicate their service to the Friday night bands. The great music being made by local groups, ignored by major labels who could use the new internet service to attain a global reach that was not previously possible.
I even suggested Napster could turn itself into a musician's marketplace, letting these Friday night bands sell via napster, letting Napster take a small cut on each transaction.
Napster elected to take another route and they sacked me for not agreeing with it.
I had forgotten all about this until YouTube came roaring along. Every day I see a video of some group whose music and performance quality are amazing. A small handful of groups are being discovered this was and are moving into stardom, but most still are not. I would be grateful, yes grateful, if I could click to buy tunes directly from YouTube. I know there are ther ways to make this happen now, but nothing so clean and so simple.
So how about it YouTube? Are you planning to do this? If not why not? If not, would you let some third party insert a widget so that they could do it?
