Dear Shel,

You wrote: "There were no organizers, no leaders, no agenda, no list of demands to be negotiated."

I can think of any number of demands. Deng Xiaoping and Li Peng (the Premier) should resign. The government should retract the April 26 People's Daily editorial branding the student-led protests "turmoil," and should recognize the legality of student organizations, as well as freedom of the press. There were definitely leaders (many students, some professors); perhaps, you are right, no clear agenda; only purpose. And there was certainly spontaneous support for the students among the general populace.

You wrote: "The crowd built over up over several days..."

The immediate events leading up to Tiananmen stretched back several weeks, including the death of Party general secretary Hu Yaobang, and the commemoration of the May Fourth Movement.

You wrote: "On June 4, 1989, the soldiers suddenly opened fire"

But soldiers first opened fire on June 3, 1989, before they had reached Tiananmen Square. This is well-established.

By the way, the "Tank Man" photo was taken after the massacre, not before, as your post seems to indicate.

You also mention "a massacre that occurred in Beijing's largest and best-know square," by which I take it you mean Tiananmen Square.

But the massacre did not take place there.

Christopher,

It may be that each of your corrections are right and each of my statements you cited are wrong. I gleaned my info from wikipedia and other online sources. I am not an expert on the events that occurred on those days. But I don't know the source of any of the corrections you make. I could not find much about you online so I have no idea your level of authority. All that aside, none of your comments go to the core of my central points, that since that time, Chinese people have been doled increasing tastes of freedom, but they are still not allowed to decide for themselves as the people in Tienanmen Square so very much wanted on that day in 1989.
