The finer threads of Internet Connection
Steve Clayton that Geek in disguise, points to an English Cut post, by Thomas Mahon, the Saville Row blogging tailor we wrote about in Naked Conversations, who is in turn pointing to Victor, a Nigerian custom tailor.
Observes Steve, one of Microsoft's most popular bloggers:
"These stories are what the web and blogging is all about - Thomas Mahon of English Cut fame connects with Victor, a tailor in Nigeria. The chance of this happening pre-web (or pre-blog) are remote to say the least. Here are two things that are likely (read inevitable) to happen now:
- Thomas's widespread appeal is likely to generate further coverage of this story. perhaps even mainstream media. Thomas will get more trade (even though he doesn't need it)
- Victor is likely to get some trade from people he's never met before as Thomas just helped put him on the map (the web map that is)
Neither of these guys are intentionally pimping each other. They found a common link via the web and it's likely to be of benefit to both of them simply because they're fond of each others works. Imagine that in traditional, non web based business.
I can't imagine a car manufacturer in Detroit saying "hey take a look at those great little Fiat's in Italy. Man we make GREAT cars but if you're in Italy and you need a motor, they're the puppies"
But there's more connection than that. How do Steve, a Microsoft executive and a British suit-maker link together? They both have benefited from the creative marketing brilliance of a formerly barely employed illustrator named Hugh MacLeod. Hugh created the Microsoft Blue Monster while consulting Steve's Microsoft group.
But, wait there's more. I got to write about Thomas through Hugh, who was already pals with co-author Robert Scoble, who, at the time, was a pretty popular Microsoft blogger himself.
My point is this: There's a whole lot of weaviong going on in the blogosphere.

At this point in time, you can't tell these types of stories too much. Some day we will take it for granted I imagine, but for now, it is mana for us in the choir and speedbumps for those not yet in the game. Any opportunity to both savor or to question is a valuable one IMO. Thanks!

It may be entirely possible that Robert and Hugh cemented their relationship at the chaotic yet uniquely mind-opening Reboot07 conference in 2005, in Copenhagen; perhaps they had already met before. Either way, this web gets spun through not-so-chance meetings online that get validated in offline meetups. There is often such great satisfaction in meeting a blogging pal over a drink or dinner at some point. And may this continue for a long time.
