40% of world prefer social harmony to free press

The BBC reports that it conducted a survey in which only 56% of those polled though a free press was important to society.  A full 40% thought restricting press for the sake of social harmony was preferable.  I wonder how they would vote on incarcerating social dissenters or perhaps waterboarding activists.

Shel,
That's disturbing. While we all might get disillusioned from time to time by what we humans do to each other, hiding from the realities of the world doesn't solve anything.

Moreover, 40% is a large number of people and your points are well taken here. Whatever side of the political fence we may come from, hiding the truth to help people feel comfortable with society is a horrid thought.

Regards,
Rick
