I've been writing a lot more about the normalization of blogging lately. While others seem to see some sort of peek, I see evidence that blogging is going where Robert and I predicted it would go in Naked Conversations and that is everywhere.
This thought ties into Global neighborhoods, because blogs area way for geographically diverse people to find each other and share interesting and useful stuff on subjects of share passion.
Two blogs that I've recently discovered come to mind. One is 10,000 birds, which provides a focal point for the enormous global community of bird watchers. Apparently fans are, uh... flocking to it. It has over 600 links and is ranked by Technorati at approximately 20,000 most popular. I think it is a very well done effort.
Another new community blog that is worth watching is Dale Ball's Green Roof Info, Green roofs, you may not know, are a concept to make the roofs of buildings planted gardens. These gardens, cannot only be visually pleasing, but also serve as a food source in urban areas, particularly in emerging areas. But of much greater significance is the fact that green roofs serve as an inexpensive, easily replaceable and energy efficient building insulation, keeping the building warm in winter and cool in summer as well as restoring cleaner air to the area where large green roofs exist. There are more of these buildings than you may think. Ball's blog is just starting and he needs to keep at it for a while, so that other members of the environmental community who hang out in the green roof neighborhood can share more information and experience.

Thanks, Shel. Your ideas on Global Neighborhoods definitely apply in my corner of the blogosphere, where birders, naturalists, and science lovers hang out. Both the journaling and photo-sharing aspects of blogging make the medium particularly apt for birders, who have always fostered a culture of information sharing. I'm proud to say that I'm part of a fascinating conversation that spans the globe.
