Southwest Blogs. I've been Scobleized

I was just about to post something about my disappointment in the newly started Southwest Airlines blog when Scoble, made more agile by his recent brief retirement, had this to say on the very same subject. He pretty much wraps up my thoughts on the subject.

I guess strange minds think alike.

Like, Scoble Southwest is my primary regional airline.  I could tell them all sorts of reasons why I love them, but this blog by their VP Marketing and Sales does not motivate me to join their conversation.

God, I'd much rather hear from a pilot or flight attendant or one of their really nice gate personnel. But to tell me that SWA is for business travelers when I have been using it for business travel more than once a month for about a year now, is kind of insulting.  To complain that they are not just a leisure travel airline has certain irony.

Every time I go to my favorite vacation spots, I have to use a different carrier because Southwest doesn't fly to Mexico, Hawaii, Italy or any of the other places where Paula and I can play when we have the money.

Maybe their listening? The blog seems to have some interesting stories lately, from very approachable bloggers. Good on them.

I don't mind being in a minority on this. I'd like EasyJet to do one - they're the UK equivalent of SWA. Same goes for RyanAir - the not so gorgeous Irish equivalent. I fly them both aqnd I'd like to know more.

Of course the blogosphere has a lot to offer them but unless someone is going to set up a I'm Nuts over SWA to get attention then l say let SWA try and get engaged with those that can help them out with what business customers want. Otherwise, the potential conversation is lost. Is that such a good idea?

I think we run the risk of judging new blogs without remembering our roots. I've learned more by engaging than I ever could if no-one was prepared to guide me through - which requireed their attention. Am I so ungrateful that I can't stoop to lend a helping hand to those coming after me - wherever they come from?

In recent times, I've seen a couple of new blogs - like most new blogs, they're awful. Content the problem - not the desire. I've tried to help as best I can and for free. Why? The more people I can get into my segment, the more I learn.

Unlike VCs, the investment is minimal but with a potentially gigantic return. There wll be some losers along the way. The cost to me of lending a hand? Zippo, zero, nada. Not a bad trade off.
