Winners & Sinners in Austin

I am speaking at The Blogging Enterprise in Austin on Nov. 2.  Steve Rubel is keynoting and it looks like a pretty good event.  I had this hit-myself-on-the-forehead moment in the car a few minutes ago, when it dawned on me that I better start writing my talk.

The subject is blogging winners and sinners. Of course, I have some ideas of my own, but I'd love to hear suggestions. I plan to name names, and since this is their hometown and I know they will have representatives in the room, I will discuss Dell in a way to make Jeff Jarvis proud.

But I want also to explain what the criteria are.  So my add-on question is: In blogging what does it take to make a winner or a sinner? If I use what you say, I'll attribute it to you if you wish.

Also, I am free the night of Nov. 1 for any blogging dinner or event related to the conference. I would hate to have to sit alone in my room that night in the dark.

Shel - good questions! Here's my two cents.

A good blogger is someone who, not only has something interesting to say to their audience, but also allows appropriately worded responses no matter if they agree or disagree with the post. I say 'appropriately worded' because I agree with your Living Room Rules 100%.

An example of a 'winner' to me is your friend BL Ochman. Yes, she reserves the right to review comments before they are posted, which might be a good practice. However, once she's deemed that the wording is appropriate the comments are posted. As you know, she and I haven't always agreed, but she's unfailingly posted my comments. For this, she has earned my utmost respect. She has interesting things to say and she lists comments, good and bad. "Winner" in my book!

There are others that review comments before they are posted and, if they don't agree, they will not be posted to the blog. Hmmm...in my book, that's a "Sinner".

If I was in Austin, I'd take you up on the dinner invite. Let me know if you are ever in New England!

In my experience, it's a pretty clear line - winners let go, sinners hold on.

Winners trust their company, their customers, and most importantly , their employees. They have a healthy mixture of faith and confidence in what they do and who they are. They give up control and accept the risk in an effort to connect, convince and communicate with people.

Sinners hold on with everything they've got and hope they can control the conversation and thereby protect themselves.

Let go or hold on. It all comes down to trust.

Brian,

I know of no Naked Conversations community member who would be more tuned in to defining sinners than you and your organization. With your permission, I will quote you in my talk.

I can't get the link to The Blogging Enterprise to work. Would like to, please.

Thanks.

Marti-I have fixed the link. I'm sorry for the carelessness and it should work for you now.
