Andrew Carton, who became my friend after I interviewed him for Naked Conversations, dropped by for dinner last night and we had a great time discussing ideas until way too late. Just as he was leaving, we started discussing Comments and my Living Room Policy, which essentially says, that if I consider you rude or you won't tell me who you are, I'll simply throw you out of my blog. I noted that nasty comments had been a problem, but not recently.
Andrew made a very wise observation: For the most part, people use the same tone and language in their comments as bloggers use in the original posting. If you swear a lot in your posting, then people tend to swear in comments. If you use a rude or harsh style, then comments follow suit.
He's right of course. But I had not noticed until he mentioned it. I like Andrew. He has a fine mind and a pure heart. I'm guessing he'll turn his Treonauts into a very successful business.
