A reader defends our credit

Just saw Richard Tallent stick up for us. Much appreciated. Yeah, we're getting incoming fire from John Robb. His blog implied that he believes he deserves the money and the credit from the production of our book.

This is one reason we're doing the book in public. That way everyone's point of view is out there up front and our readers can help make sure everyone gets the credit they deserve.

One thing. Our book isn't gonna be a rehash of what someone wrote two years ago on the Internet. Why do I say that? Well, for one, we're doing our own research. Shel is flying around the country interviewing people for the book. He is gonna be here in Seattle-land tomorrow to interview Microsofties for one chapter in the book. Which shows our attention to detail. We could have done these interviews by email or Skype, but we think it's important to take the time to do original research.

We hear John is working on getting a book deal of his own, too, and are glad to see that.

Hello John.

(1.) I suggest we stop calling them terrorists, since they don't scare many people and all they really do is destroy and kill. Now they have taken to targeting children and women. This is "striking terror" into anyone's hearts? Even big deal 9-11 only sparked fear for a few months. It passed quickly.

The person who hides their face under scarves and masks is the one who is terrified. Not the ones who line up to vote with purple inked fingers and television cameras sending their faces all over the world.

(2.) I would like to see, in your BIO page, actual hypertext links to the many articles you have written on terrorism and tech. Empty claims mean nothing if no one can easily track down the articles.

(3.) What was it that Robert Scoble and Shel Israel "stole" from you? Are you the only one who wrote about businesses using blogs? How serious are you about this "plagiarism"? Why don't you write a book on business blog implementation? I'm sure it would sell well, since you're so famous I never heard of you.

I don't think John has a leg to stand on with his complaint.

Tony Robbins has made a fortune rehashing material that was adapted from his mentor Jim Rohn. Do you see Jim complaining? Hell, no!

John should be happy that Scoble got the book deal. It is a validation of John's ideas about the power of the blogging medium to put a human face on a business. Did he originate the idea? Maybe. Was he one of the first ones on the bus? Definitely. But he didn't create a world-famous blog that attracts media attention. Scoble did. Therefore, Scoble reaps the rewards.

If John had implemented his concept as successfully as Scoble did, John's blog would be the "it blog" that is generating interest and dollars. But he didn't, and so it isn't.

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Execution matters. I know that sounds cold, but that's the simple reality of the matter.

Personally, I read blogs a lot, and I buy books on the topics I read blogs about, sometimes. The thing a book does that a blog does not do is organize everything into one coherent whole. If you do it right, you'll shake out the underlying issues and make them clear to your readers. Those tend to change less frequently.

In some sense, you are contributing to the commoditization of something Robb may have felt he pioneered. However, that's just the march of progress.

Besides, who said you were pre-ordained to get it right?

I don't mean to fan any fires, but Seth Godin says that innovation is not enough. You must champion the innovation and push it until it becomes a successful implementation.

John Robb may have understood how blogs could be used by business.

But Evan Williams unleashed the fast, easy, free Blogger behind Google's Blogspot, and it's Robert and Shel who are championing business blogging, along with others like Debbie Weil, Dave Taylor, John Moore, Steve Rubel, and Amy Gahran.
